I took out the compost this morning and saw one of the cats in hunt mode by the fence. I wanted to see what he was stalking and as I brushed aside the vines I saw a bird squatting that couldn’t fly. The cat by this point ran around the fence and grabbed the bird in his mouth and started to run off.

I dropped the compost bucket, grabbed the cat, and put him back in the house, and went back out to inspect the bird in the alleyway. It had its mouth wide open, occasionally yelping. It wasn’t standing on its feet, and didn’t look like it really could. It pooped in fright twice. Our second cat came sprinting towards us, so I went back into the house with the cat, thinking I could find something for the bird to eat, how, what? A small bowl of water-diluted sunflower seed butter and tahini with some mashed blueberries, to be fed with a dropper from a vanilla extract bottle.

The bird ate a lot. It was messy. It shit a lot, at first it looked normal and then it was a lot of diarrhea. A lot. It was getting pretty hot so I propped a shoebox over it for some shade and shelter. The bird started puking too, shaking its head furiously while its seed-water sprayed out. Damn.

When the bird moved you could see that it was pretty injured behind its neck and left wing; all of the feathers missing and the skin looking pretty rough. I don’t know what’s wrong with it, or how to help it, if I could even do anything? If I should’ve just let the cat play with it and kill it?

I went back out to give it water. I’ll keep checking on it every 20 minutes and give it food and water but I don’t know if it’s really doing anything but prolonging its pain. Its poop seems to be firming up again and it stretched its wings and stood fully upright a few times, with a more confident chirp, so maybe it might get better?

Ugh.

I always feel weird intervening in these sort of situations where I don’t actually know what to do or how to help and if I’m getting in the way of a natural process, I guess empathy and humans are part of that natural process but what if I’m fucking with it more?

Poor little dude. At least its safe temporarily to (hopefully) recover.

in an act of determined hydration, i brewed a big batch of hibiscus-mint tea to have iced for the next few days.

i wanted to learn a little more about hibiscus and found a great story:

Jerry was taken into custody of US marshals today at 4:18 PM. Throughout his hearing, he did not answer any questions; he remained silent the entire time.

Over a hundred people showed in support of Jerry. The court room was packed, and he knew as he was taken by the marshals that we support and love him. The crowd yelled out their support for him as he was escorted out of the room.

Jerry asked that we release this statement to his supporters after his incarceration:

By the time you read this, I will be in the custody of the United States government for continuing my refusal to cooperate with a federal grand jury. This is the right thing to do.

I continue to believe that the government is using this federal grand jury in an abusive manner to force me to divulge information about my political associations and social networks.

If we mean what we say when we talk about radical politics, then we do not participate in witch hunts, inquisitions, or the assembly of black lists. As an individual, I will not lend legitimacy to government brutality and intimidation; I will not be used. As an anarchist, I will summon the courage to be stronger than the forces of the State’s all-too-real repression; I will not break.

Your show of truly powerful support has done nothing but strengthen my resolve in refusing to cooperate. We must not let ourselves be isolated by the government’s heavy-handed tactics. We must not give the state that last inch it tries to break in every one of us.

New Laws Would Make Environmental Protest “Terrorism”

Most people have heard of tree-sitting—a tactic environmentalists use to prevent old-growth trees from being cut down and whole forests decimated. In its heyday, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, members of groups like Earth First! climbed 100-foot-tall Redwoods and stayed there to save them. Beginning in 1997, one woman in Humboldt, California, named her tree Luna and stayed in it for two years, until enough money could be raised to prevent it from being axed. In 1998, in a Northern California old-growth forest, another treesitter named David Gypsy Chain was “accidentally” killed when loggers felled a tree that came crashing into the protester. He died instantly of massive head trauma.

This style of protest was also hugely successful—that is, until a series of arrests in 2005 against radical environmentalists who were labeled “terrorists.” It scared the shit out of the environmental-activist community, and folks started drifting away.

Now, there’s a vibrant national protest movement reviving those “direct action” tactics of civil disobedience again, and adding a new political savvy to the mix. They, too, have been incredibly effective. In Oregon, in the summer of 2011, one blockade took 50 cops, a backhoe, and a 125-foot-crane to remove treesitters. A few days later, activists locked themselves together in an Oregon Department of Forestry office. The group responsible, the Cascadia Forest Defenders, say they won’t stop until the Elliott State Forest is protected from clearcutting.

As a result—surprise, surprise—politicians are trying to create new laws that make tree-sits and other direct-action techniques illegal. The bills even single out the Elliott State Forest campaign by name and allow corporations to sue protesters for costing them money.
